[One Piece] “Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji — Sure. But the Rest?”Why Some Straw Hats Still Don’t ‘Feel Right’ to Fans (2018 Thread)

Straw Hat Crew Debate — June 17, 2018
Who actually “belongs” on the Sunny, and who still feels off?

Fans say they understand Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji.
But once the crew grows beyond that core, something shifts.
Is this about roles, aesthetics, or just nostalgia refusing to let go?

Chopper ← huh?
Robin ← what?
Franky ← seriously?
Brook ← uhh…
Jinbe ← !?!? lol !?!?!? lol

I want them to add weird ones like Buggy.

3: Anonymous Pirate. 2018/06/17
Chopper and Robin are fine too.

I’ve come to accept Franky.
The skeleton and the fish? Still don’t accept them.

Brook saying “my journey ends here” feels like something that’ll happen eventually.

The skeleton is obviously needed.
In the Big Mom arc he settled into that old guy role, supporting the younger ones from the shadows.

“Roles, Intentions, and Early Promises”

Both Luffy and the author wanted a musician from the very start.

Up to Robin is fine.
But a shipwright is necessary, and they said from the start they wanted a musician.

I’m okay with the skeleton, but
why overlap his weapon with Zoro’s?
That part’s weird.

“Jinbe, Power, and the ‘Too Many Fighters’ Problem”

Is Jinbe really necessary? He’s strong, sure, but still.

The skeleton’s actually been super useful.
If anything, Zoro — who can only fight — is more unnecessary.

A vice-captain with no real job.

Up to Robin is fine.
The robot and the skeleton though…
Also, did Jinbe officially join?
I actually like him as a character.

t’s pretty much exactly how it was planned from the start.

Usopp’s the vice-captain, dude.
“Listed as: Vice-Captain / Sniper.”

(´・ω・`) There are just too many now, so it’s hard to see everyone shine.

👉 Where Japanese Fans Draw the Line

Japanese fans aren’t rejecting characters at random.
The line is psychological, not logical.
Once the crew passes the “original adventure fantasy” threshold, every new member is judged not by usefulness, but by whether they disrupt the imagined balance fans locked in years earlier.

👉 What This Debate Really Reveals

This isn’t about Brook or Jinbe themselves.
It’s about cast inflation anxiety.
When a long-running story grows, fans fear dilution — less spotlight, blurred roles, and emotional distance — even when the narrative justification is solid.
