[One Piece] Did Oda Really Mess Up? The “No Duplicate Devil Fruits” Debate Explodes

Baroque Works

Dalton, Kaku, Pell, Sengoku — 2018/06/15
Did Eiichiro Oda contradict his own Devil Fruit rules?

One Piece has always insisted on one iron rule: no two Devil Fruits are the same.
So what happens when readers spot what looks like a direct contradiction?
Did Oda actually slip up — or are fans missing something obvious?

■ “Same Devil Fruits Can’t Exist” — Or Can They?

Same Devil Fruits can’t exist! snaps
Dalton (Ushi Ushi no Mi)
Kaku (Ushi Ushi no Mi)
Oda messed up, didn’t he!

The models are different, though.

That’s some real moo-moo excuse lol

Different Zoan types is actually a good idea.
You’ve got obvious power tiers like Mythical Zoans too.

Pell is basically an immortal bird-man anyway.

Same name doesn’t mean same Devil Fruit.

Ace: “You’re smoke, I’m fire. With our abilities, neither of us can win.”

23: Anonymous Pirate (2018/06/15)
Pell: “Only five flying abilities have been confirmed in the world.”
Marco (Phoenix), Kab (Beetle), Bian (Wasp), Smoker (Smoke), Crocodile (Sand),
Kizaru (Light), Enel (Lightning), Caesar (Gas), Lafitte (unknown but flies with wings)

Buggy flies too, you know.

Buggy:
“Gyahahaha! As long as my feet are on the ground, this is my game!!!”

Isn’t this actually correct?
Tori Tori Falcon, Tori Tori Phoenix, Mushi Mushi Beetle, Mushi Mushi Wasp, Lafitte’s fruit — that’s five.
Logias aren’t flight abilities, they just happen to let you move through the air.

Sengoku — Hito Hito no Mi
Chopper — Hito Hito no Mi
There you go.

Hito Hito no Mi: Model Buddha
Hito Hito no Mi: no model
Yep, broken system.

Every single thing in One Piece can be solved with Haki. Boom!!

Giraffes are bovids, family Giraffidae. That’s the logic.

Different ●● models.
(´・ω・`) Depends how you define “same,” really.

👉 Why This “Contradiction” Hit Japanese Fans So Hard

Japanese readers tend to treat author-declared rules as sacred.
Once Oda said “no duplicate Devil Fruits,” that statement became a baseline law.
So when Dalton and Kaku both fall under “Ushi Ushi no Mi,” it feels like betrayal — even if models technically save the system.

This isn’t nitpicking.
It’s fans holding the worldbuilding to the standard Oda himself set.

👉 What This Debate Actually Reveals About One Piece

What’s interesting isn’t whether Oda made a mistake — it’s how flexible One Piece has become.
Zoan “models,” Mythical variants, and classification logic exist specifically to avoid hard contradictions.

At the same time, Pell’s infamous flight quote shows that early-world rules weren’t designed for a 20+ year story.
Fans know this. They just enjoy poking the cracks.

In other words:
This isn’t about being right.
It’s about loving the details enough to argue them.
