Gunko’s Ability and Imu’s Possession
In Chapter 1173, Saint Sommers uses an MMA Nika attack and ends up sinking the ship that was supposed to transport the children. But the damage doesn’t stop there — it even leaves a massive hole in the “sea clouds.”
The children’s march can’t be stopped, so at this rate, they’ll fall straight into that hole. Even Sommers panics, admitting, “This is a serious blunder!!” — so he is aware of the mistake.
He immediately contacts Gunko via Den Den Mushi, asking her to cancel the effect of the arrows. But since Imu is “inside” her, he gives up, thinking it’s impossible.
…Though honestly, if that’s the case, shouldn’t he just ask Imu directly?

It seems that while Imu has taken over Gunko’s body, they can’t actually use her ability—the Arrow-Arrow Fruit. In other words, Imu is unable to use the power of the Arrow-Arrow Fruit. Only Gunko can use it… at least, that’s the assumption.
That’s why Saint Sommers is saying it’s no use—because of Imu. In other words, would he have to actually ask Imu, “Please leave Gunko’s body”?
Before, I started wondering—what exactly is Imu’s “possession”? Besides Gunko, Imu has also possessed Saint Saturn before, right? So I began thinking… what kind of mechanism is this, exactly?

There was that “personality transplant surgery” using Ope Ope no Mi, right? With that ability, the person who takes over a body can also use that body’s powers. They couldn’t fully control it, but Tashigi was able to use the powers of the Moku Moku no Mi (Chapter 669).
But Imu’s possession doesn’t seem to work like that.
In Chapter 1173, Gunko briefly resurfaced and loosened the arrows. That allowed Brook and the others to escape their restraints—but once Gunko’s consciousness faded again, the arrows tightened.
So maybe it wasn’t Imu actively using the ability. Instead, when Gunko’s consciousness disappeared, the action of loosening the arrows disappeared along with it.
I’m not entirely sure, though—it’s still a bit hard to wrap my head around.

The power (or ability?) Imu has been using since taking possession doesn’t seem to be Gunko’s, but rather Imu’s own. And in exchange, maybe Imu can’t use Gunko’s ability.
As for the reason why—that’s where things get interesting…
A person can only have one Devil Fruit ability.
So maybe this restriction still applies.
This could turn into a major question tied to where Devil Fruit abilities actually reside. If Imu has taken over Gunko’s body, then how are they able to use their own ability within that body?
Well… I guess we’ll need to see a bit more before jumping to conclusions.
